Bug-tastic Bug Cake Recipe
Thanks very much to our friend Danusha for this fantastic idea – so much fun and sooooo tasty!
You can check out her other creations on her Etsy Store (not all edible!)
Here’s how to make a great bug cake with your little bugs:
For the Cake:
125g butter, softened
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
125g caster sugar
2 eggs
200g self-raising flour
1/2 cup milk
Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Grease and line tins. Beat the butter, add the vanilla extract and sugar in a small bowl and mix with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Stir in the sifted flour and milk in two batches. Pour into cake tin(s) and
bake for 40 mins if making one large cake, 20 mins for cupcakes.
This makes a dense cake: great for sculpting and great for eating the same day as making. I put mine in the fridge overnight to make it even denser.
For the Icing:
125g butter, softened
200g icing sugar
2 Tbs milk
Food colourings – Black, Red and Yellow
Hundreds & Thousands, Liquorice, Smarties, Freckles
Beat the butter in a small bowl with an electric mixer until it’s white, light and creamy. Gradually beat in half the sifted icing sugar, then the milk, then the remaining icing sugar. Divide the icing into smaller bowls and add required colours by stirring in.
You now have your palette and all that remains is to get arty with your creation. You can bling up the big ladybird’s spots with hundreds & thousands, add a liquorice bootstrap down her back and use Smarties for her eyes. For smaller ladybird cakes, use Smarties and Freckles. The bee cakes just need the liquorice cut into short lengths for their stripes. Yum!
